Year 1

Curriculum Plan Spring 2

April 16th 2018

Welcome back to school everybody! We hope you had a super holiday and a good rest. We have lots to look forward to this term, including the Dinosaur dome which will arrive very soon.

Below is a copy of the Year 1 curriculum which gives a brief outline of the areas to be covered this term. With the phonics assessment due in June, there will be a big emphasis on ensuring the children are fully confident with all sounds.

Dunham Massey 2018

Dunham Massey 2018 1

12th February 2018

Dear Parents and Children,

As you know the Year 1 children are expected to master their letter and number formation. The children have been working very hard in class but to further assist with this, over half term we are sending home a pack filled with some resources. They include number and alphabet formation booklets, a pencil and a rubber. The packs can stay at home with you and do not need to come back to school.

We hope you can spare sometime over the holiday and going forward, to complete the booklets. Even 5 minutes a day can make a difference.

With the end of term almost upon us, we would like to thank you all again for your hard work and support and wish you a happy and restful holiday.

Mrs Smith, Mrs Tomlinson and Mrs Stow

31st January 2018

Dear Parents and Children,

Thank you for all your hard work so far this term. As you probably know, all children have progressed at least one book band over the past few weeks. Thank you for reading at home, it makes such a difference. Thank you also to Mrs Stow and Mrs Bates who have been helping to assess the children’s reading abilities.

I have now updated the book selection on the Active Learn website. The children can now access books which are hopefully more suitable for their reading levels. I have also attached the website address below. As you know, you will need a username, password and a school code. I have a copy of the user names and school password if you would like them again. Please do not hesitate to ask. There are some super books online!

Diaries & Reading Records

Please can you ensure that you are signing your child's home/school diary each week at the bottom of the page. Staff will also sign here to show the diary has been checked.

Please can you also ensure that you are recording your child's daily reading in their reading record. This does not have to be their school reading book, but could be the Active Learn books or another book you may have at home. This is closely monitored by, not only the class teachers, but also the English Coordinator in the school.

Thank you in advance for your support!

Our Class Assembly

As it is anti-bullying week, our assembly was all about anti-bullying.

We sang songs about working 'Together' and becoming 'A Better Me'

We talking about our class value, which is kindness

We show kindness in lots of different ways. Here are some examples...

I show kindness by helping people.

I show kindness by sharing my toys.

I show kindness by playing with everybody.

I show kindness by helping mum.

I show kindness by helping people when they fall over.

Our Welly Walk

Class 1 had a fantastic time on our welly walk on Monday. This took place as part of our geography curriculum (where we are looking at the local area) and also as part of our science curriculum (where we are looking at our senses).

Have a look at the photographs to see what we got up to!

Welcome to Class 1

I hope you have had a fantastic summer and are looking forward to a new school year in class 1 - I can't wait to hear all about your adventures over the last 6 weeks!

We've got some exciting work planned for this first half term, building on the skills already learnt in Reception. We will continue with our daily phonics as well as introducing more formal maths and English lessons.

Please find some other useful information below:

Water bottles

Children should bring in a water bottle which is clearly labelled with their name and which will be kept on our water bottle trolley. It is really important that children keep hydrated throughout the day and we appreciate your support in providing this.

Snacks

Toast, milk and juice will be available to purchase at morning break times throughout the week. If children wish to purchase these, they should bring money in a labelled purse. Fruit will also be available at break times, free of charge, or you may wish to bring in your own healthy snack.

Home/School Diaries

These will be checked every Monday and Friday, so please feel free to send any messages or important information that you would like us to know. If you have a message on any other day, please ask your child to place their diary in the 'home' box for us to check.

Home Learning

Children will receive homework on a Friday and should return this by the following Wednesday for marking and feedback. Homework will alternate between English and maths each week and will always be work which consolidates the learning for that week: this could be an online task, a practical activity or a worksheet. Homework is a fantastic way to reinforce learning done in school and we really appreciate your support with this smiley

It is also recommended that children in Year 1 should read for 15 minutes per day, practise number bonds twice a week and phonics/spellings three times a week. Please record your child's daily reading in their reading records.

Children will be issued with a list of high frequency words that they will be expected to read and spell, which will be changed regularly. Please see the 'useful websites' link for some useful websites and online activities.

Finally, children will also be set one task per term (from a choice of two) which will be linked to their topic learning.

PE

Please ensure that all uniform and PE kit is clearly labelled with your child’s name so that it can be returned if it gets lost. PE kits should be kept in school at all times in case of timetable changes. Long hair should be tied back for safety reasons during PE lessons.

Finally...

If you have any questions, queries or concerns, please do not hesitate to let me know.

We're really looking forward to getting started on what is going to be a fantastic first half term in year 1 smiley!
